Campus Initiatives
As a guest, it is easy to make smart environmental choices when you dine at a HU Dining café. We know today's college students want to do the right thing for the planet and we also understand you lead busy lives, so your Howard chefs and managers do a lot of the work for you behind the scenes!
From purchasing local seasonal produce whenever possible to reducing inorganic and organic waste, your campus team is dedicated to providing you with an exceptional dining experience that is good for you and good for the planet.
Howard University Innovates through OZZI To-Go System
The OZZI System was designed to eliminate disposable waste simply by changing out the throw away mindset to that of a reusable way of thinking. A student enters the dining hall, makes a food choice, places the food in a reusable Preserve 2 Go container, consumes the food wherever they wish, and returns the empty container to an OZZI machine to receive a token for their next use.
There are currently two OZZI Systems located at the front entrance of Blackburn Cafe and Bethune Annex.
Swipe Out Hunger At Howard University
Sodexo, Swipe Out Hunger and Howard University Division of Student Affairs are partnering to fight student food insecurity on-campus. Sodexo, has provided meals to establish a Meal Swipe Bank for students experiencing food insecurity. All Students may request swipes by submitting their information on the Swipe Out Meal Request Form. Click this link to learn more.
Leanpath
Leanpath is a food waste tracking system our team utilizes at Bethune Annex and Blackburn Cafe to better prepare for and manage food waste. The system not only weighs food waste but also tracks what food is over-produced and makes recommendations to help us manage everything from future ordering of materials to preparation quantities for specific dates, times and even the dishes we serve.
